Melody Gardot The Olympia Theatre, Dublin

Waiting for Gardot...
Ok it's not exactly Beckett. But it was in his hometown where the delicious Melody Gardot graced us with her presence..
The Olympia Theatre, Dublin was the setting..
Arriving 45 minutes late for curtain-up, she came onstage without batting an eyelash. Although maybe she did..With her sunglasses on, it was difficult to tell. Melody says she wears them as her eyes are sensitive to light...They also make her look cool and sassy, if I may say.
She walked straight on to centre stage, spread some sand (I think) on a sheet of plywood and proceeded to stamp her feet and clap her hands..She was ready for action..
Backed by her Drummer, Double Bass player and Sax/Clarinet player, she switched from grand piano to guitar effortlessly, even managing to light a cigarette between two songs..How cool is that!!
All the songs from her wonderful album ''My One And Only Thrill' were performed as if for the first time..'Fresh' as they say, which is no mean feat in my opinion, as she informed her audience that she's been touring since Febuary!!
As a fellow Pianist, I was so thrilled to see a full sized grand piano on stage..Not only did Melody 'tickle the ivories', but being aware of it's place in the Percussion family, she plucked the strings, throwing in the odd glissando here and there, tapped it, beat it and made a brand new friend of it..
With songs like 'Baby I'm A Fool', 'If The Stars Were Mine', and 'Deep Within The Corners Of My Mind', it's so easy to fall in love with her music and her voice, which is an instrument in it's own right. Such clarity is so welcomed in todays' climate of female Songstresses..And she can scat like all the greats from the past.
At one point during the show, Melody turned to a full house and remarked how beautiful 'this old theatre is..I can imagine Beethoven or Mozart playing here'. Not far off the mark...Handel's Messiah was first performed about 500 yards from where she was sitting, in Fishamble Street in 1742..Close but no cigar, Melody!!
She finished her show with her rendition of that classic standard..'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'..This song, having grown stale in my ears over the years due to the Eva Cassidy version, was such a delight to experience. A wonderful interpretation and welcomed back into the 'musical fold'..
This woman as a Songwriter is a pure romantic at heart with a devilish sense of humour to boot.. I've purposely used her first name throughout my 'little' review..Most reviewers will write Gardot this..Gardot that..But with a name like Melody, it's a shame to waste the opportunity to use it..Melody by name. Indeed Melody by nature.. As Sammy Beckett would say..'Such is life'..

Ten Favourite Lyrics

I was once asked in a radio interview about my thoughts on Joni Mitchell's lyrics. I quite unashamedly admitted that I had never listened to them. You see, it was always her music that 'turned me on' (Like A Radio..lol)..The interviewer stood up and shook my hand 'live' on air and said that I was the first person he had ever met who was in total agreement with him..Now I'm not saying that Joni's lyrics don't matter. Of course they do. But I've always been more of a melody and chords kinda girl.I have however, over the intertwining years tuned into many a lyric, including Joni's (I suppose being a Songwriter, I ought to lend an ear every once in a while). So here are a selection of some of my favourite lyrics that have ' tickled my fancy'..

Ten Favourite Lyrics
1. 'Oh I could drink a case of you darling..still I'd be on my feet, I'd still be on my feet'..A Case Of You..Joni Mitchell..I can hear y'all sayin' 'I told ya'

2. 'With a subway token and a dollar tucked inside my shoe'.. Rhinestone Cowboy..Larry Weiss....Last-chance saloon a hollerin'!!

3. 'He's got an arm, like a leg'..Big Strong Man (My Brother Sylveste)..Traditional..Sooooo visual, I can feel it.

4. 'Gone like a fifth of gin, gone gone away. Gone like the shape I'm in, gone gone away.My baby's gone away'..Gone..John Haitt..Always prioritise!!

5. 'Parachutes, Army Boots, Sleeping Bags for Two, Sentimental Jamboree'..Junk..Paul McCartney..Simple imagery always works best for me.

6. 'Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city'..Downtown..Tony Hatch/Jackie Trent..I can hear the hustle and bustle in this one..

7. 'And if it snows that stretch down south won't ever stand the strain'..Wichita Lineman..Jimmy Webb...Try singing it!!

8. 'Some day, when I'm awfully low, When the world is cold, I will feel a glow just thinking of you...And the way you look tonight'..The Way You Look Tonight'..Dorothy Fields..Four lines says it all.

9. 'Don't think because there's a ring on your finger, You needn't try anymore' ..Wives and Lovers..Hal David..I just love the sexist under and overtones of this classic..

10. 'She May be the face I can't forget, A trace of pleasure or regret, May be my treasure or the price I have to pay'.. She..Charles Aznavour. Only a Frenchman can sum up a woman!!

Check these songs out if ya like...More lyrics coming soon..Happy Trails,Celine.

Like it or Lovett

Last night I went to see one of my favourite Songwriters of all time..He's a mean Singer as well..

Yep it has to be said....Lyle's got style.

Suited and booted, guitar around his neck , he strolled on stage and began what was to become a truely memorable evening for me..Backed by his acoustic band which included Viktor Krauss on double bass and the wonderful Russ Kunkel on drums.. Russ has played with the greats, from James Taylor to J.J. Cale to Carole King (Tapestry ). With such calibre of musicianship, ya might just get some idea of the musical experience that awaited me..

He played the hits, (North Dakota, If I Had A Boat, You're Not From Texas, A Private Conversation), some new songs and of course what would a Lyle show be without his famous droll sense of humour..His pace and comic delivery are always on the button..Not bad for a Texan..hey..

Song of the night was 'You Were Always There', co written with Viktor Krauss. A beautiful, yet sorrowful song of loss. But as I've already said..Lyle's got style..He carefully balances out his more sombre songs with just enough Texas Swing to get your feet tappin' and your heart dancin'.

Wonderful show and a beautiful night..

Thanks Lyle..

Celine Carroll Interview Part 2..

How would you define the word "success"?
Happiness, peace of mind..That about sums it up for me.
Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal?
I'm looking for the best route forward in order to get my music out to the world!!
Do you have a demo or press kit, or any promotional materials?
Yep, EPK..It's all on Sonicbids and also on my myspace page. I've also a show on You Tube called CELINE CARROLL '2 NEW SONGS IN A DIFFERENT SHIRT', where I showcase my songs. The songs change on each show as well as the shirts!!
What live performance experience have you had?
With various bands and as a solo artist I guessed I've played in every phone box in this country!! I've played a couple of shows in Chicago. And I've played some shows in Nasville...the Bluebird Cafe, to name one...all us songwriters out there know about that place!!
Currently with the band, we've been playing alot around Ireland.

How do you rate your live performance ability?
I do feel that I connect with my audience. I feel it onstage and the feedback from them is alway encouraging. I love performing. So that's the battle won. Whether I'm playing solo or with the band, the vibe is always there. 'When people pay good money to see you, you better be on form'..That's the way I approach every show that I do. You owe it to them. And most times...they come back to see you again.
Have you recorded any previous CDs?
Yep..Three albums..'Catch You As You Fall', 'Itch' and at the moment, I'm hoping to release my latest album..'Such A Beautiful Light' soon.

What are your 3 favourite songs and why?
Living, breathing and sleeping music, that's a tough one. But I would say, in no particular order, purely depending on my mood....
1. 'Maybe I'm amazed' by Paul McCartney, for his sheer raw vocal delivery and his passionate lyric..Ya see, the human condition.
2.' The Look Of Love' by Bacharach and David. It has to be Dusty Springfield's version. This seductive lyric and her intimate vocal on this record just blows me away everytime I hear it. It sends me to that special place, if ya know what I mean..Once again..the human condition.
3. It has to be 'The Candyman' by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, performed by Sammy Davies Jnr. I dare anyone to listen to this song and not break out in a smile!! This song has everything going for it. Pure poetry, beautiful imagery, humour, passion, wonderful production and that 'inner child' quality.. After all, I think we're all kids at heart..The only way to survive, especially us songwriters. Yet again, the Human Condition..I rest my case!!
Have you had any previous print or broadcast media exposure or reviews?
Yep, I've been written about..I get airplay every once in a while..when Westlife are in the recording studio. It's all in the blog.. on myspace and on http://www.celinecarroll.com/

New album 'Such a Beautiful Light'
Coming Soon.

Beauty is in the ear of the beholder...
Such A Beautiful Light is a wonderful collection of 'Pure Quality'..It is the sound of a truly creative songwriter coming into her own.
On hearing each of the 12 tracks, this album has the ability to make you dance, to make you think and at times to force you to hang on for dear life..
With shades of Bacharach and King, you will want to take this smooth, soulful collection of songs into your heart forever.
Celine Carroll Interview..Part 1
What is your background?
Writing and playing music most of my life.
Played with various Dublin bands down the years. Dipped in and out as a session player. And never entered the Eurovision Song Contest!!
Why do you want to record and release your own music?
For me, as a creative person, there has to be a begining, a middle and an end to songwriting. First of all, I write to get the demons out or sometimes the Angels.. If I'm happy with what I've created, I guess the next step is to share it with others. I enjoy the recording process because it's that little step further into creativity. And then to be able to put it into someone's hand and say 'Hey, take a listen, hope you like it'. That's a good feeling. Or send it out over the ether as the case may be today!!
What are your songs about?
About 3 Mins long!! That's the short answer.. I tend to write about the obvious..' The Human Condition.' How I treat that particular subject varies from song to song.
The heart is a great muse..We all have one, so we can all relate to something written about it. Also, when I'm away, I tend to write about going home. And when I'm home I sometimes write about travelling, moving on..Weird!!
Do you write your own songs?
Yep..I tend to write mostly on my own, with the guitar or at the piano. The lyrics and music are almost always written in tandem.
I have co-written with some really great people..But the thing about co-writing is, It's a bit like going on a blind date, if you know what I mean. You're kinda at the mercy of each other!! Luckily I've had some cool, productive 'blind-dates'!!
Who are your musical influences?
I suppose the original great American Songwriters, Cole Porter, the Gershwins, far too many to mention. Then of course The Beatles, especially McCartney, for his melody in particular. Of course Lennon...Together the most sucessful blind-date of all time!!
Other artist, James Taylor, The Eagles, all at the Brill building, Gilbert O' Sullivan, what a writer!!, Jimmy McCarthy, Walter Hyatt, Lucinda Williams, a few classical heads.... tons of people..
How do you describe your music to people?
Great songs, Great Sentiment, Honesty and a lot of Humour thrown in for good measure
What image do you think your music conveys?
I've been told on more than one occasion that my music is very cinematic. I don't think you can narrow it down to a single image. Different songs convey different emotions. I do think my songs are like short stories. And I do wear my heart on my sleeve alot. But I would like to think that there's an honesty about what I do. Is honesty an image??
What are your immediate music career goals?
The plan is to do more live performances. So full houses would be something to aim for!! Get some more songs recorded at a reasonable rate!!
Get my music to as many ears as possible. Oh yeah and shift a few cds in the process!!
What are your long-term career goals?
That's a bit like that horrible question...'Where do you see yourself in five years time?' I suppose to be the best success I can possibly be in this business called Show!! To be able to write great songs, record them and have people buy them would be great. If anything, it puts food on the table.. I would love to get some songs covered by other sucessful artists, that would be a great honour. Grammy, Oscar, etc.... I will always write songs. It's what I do, It's what I am.
About Celine

On stage she delivers a live acoustic performance of groove, dynamics, passionate lyrics and melody-driven songs with her band. With buckets of Soul and thought-provoking lyrics, she is a songwriter who will draw you in on the opening chord.

Celine has recorded two albums, ('Catch You as You Fall' produced by Declan Sinnott and 'Itch' which was self-produced). Her third album, entitled 'Such A Beautiful Light' is due for release in 2009.
